Annotated Bibliography In the book The Promise of Schooling: Education in Canada, 1800-1914, Paul Axelrod (1997) raised a number of questions regarding the major developments of Canadian Schooling in the stated time period, and in particular, how public schools and education in Canada were affected by the changing economic, technological, political and social environment. The author had used a variety of general sources, including national and provincial studies, anthologies, and collections of documents that provide detailed information and research about the educational history of Canada. The book analyzes the social context in which educational policy was formed and implemented, arguing for the viewpoint that the growth of public schooling should be understood as the result of social changes that swept through society in the nineteenth century. By the mean time, it also examines the unanticipated consequences and limitations of educational reform. In addition, it pays special attention to educational players by focusing on the ideas and accomplishments of educational policy makers, trying to capture something of the dynamic and complex relations between parents, teachers, students and educational authorities. Finally, education of women, minorities and marginalized groups were also describes to address the issues of gender and social class in Canadian educational history. The book and its referred reading sources are useful for me to understand the relationship between education and society from a social historical perspective. Besides, I can apply the insights learned from this book to find the social and historical factors that result in educational problems of China. The book is subdivided into six chapters: schooling and the community, building the educational state, teachers and students, race and culture, higher learning, and schooling in the industrial age.
