1. The following appeared in a memorandum written by the vice president of Natures Way, a chain of stores selling health food and other health-related products. Previous experience has shown that our stores are most profitable in areas where residents are highly concerned with leading healthy lives. We should therefore build our next new store in Plainsville, which has many such residents. Plainsville merchants report that sales of running shoes and exercise clothing are at all-time highs. The local health club, which nearly closed five years ago due to lack of business, has more members than ever, and the weight training and aerobics classes are always full. We can even anticipate a new generation of customers: Plainsvilles schoolchildren are required to participate in a fitness for life program, which emphasizes the benefits of regular exercise at an early age. A. The authors conclusion that they will make profits in Plainsville is based on the gratuitous assumption that people who are enthusiastic about exercising will necessarily be interest in buying health food and other health-related products. B.A problem in this argument is that it simply concludes that people who are concerning about healthy lives will automatically became Natures Ways customers. Even if many people in P are interest about health food and other health-related products, the author ignores other factors that may affect the business of NW, such as the presence of competitors, the population of the area, and the eating habits of the local residents. C. Another problem in this argument is that the author simply equates strong sales of running shoes and exercise clothing to the residents interests of sports. D. The large number of club members does not necessarily indicate that they will become the customers of NW. E. The arguments conclusion that NW will make profits is unwarranted.
