* * The positive working of AMGP is based on 3 different mechanisms. First AMGP’s suppress the total growth of bacteria in the intestines. The more bacteria are present the more nutrients they use which can not be used anymore by the pig itself. A higher usage of nutrients by bacteria means a worsening of feed conversion. Especially the growth of a number of non-pathogenic bacteria like Lactobacillus Acidophilus is slowed down by AMGP’s. The bacterial profile of the gut flora is then characterized by a well-balanced flora with many small peaks and few dominant species. The gut flora will be less easily disturbed by infections with pathogenic bacteria. Last but not least AMGP’s in the feed have a small suppressing effect on Gram-negative bacteria like e.g. coli’s. * We show the experiences in Denmark to give an example what results a ban might have. In 2000 a voluntary ban on the use of AMGP is implemented. On 62% of the farms no problems occured after the ban. On 26% of the farms there were temporarily problems which were solved after short time. And on 11% of the farms there were continuing problems. With pigs there were only few problems. And there was no difference in growth and mortality compared to the period before the ban. For pigs the following measurements were applied in Denmark: -more barley/structure in the feed -lowering of protein content -acidification of drinking water (often with formic acid) With piglets there were more problems. Growth was decreased, mortality higher and uniformity worser. Also more diarrhoea occured on the farms. Following measurements were taken: Feeding strategie adjusted by making more use of feeds with increased safety: lower protein content and addition of organic acids. Adjusting management by later weaning and restricted feeding of weaned piglets (4-5 times a day). Restricted feeding ( for 14 days after weaning) gave less diarrhoea and better result. Weaning at 5 weeks instead of 4 weeks resulted in ca. 2% less mortali
