The variation we see in the travel-time-to-work example is of two types: The variation within the low and high limits, that represents typical performance. The causes of this variation are inherent to the process and will remain until the process is changed. We call this type of variation Common Cause Variation. The variation beyond the typical range. The causes of this variation are unique and not part of the typical process. We call this type of variation Special Cause Variation. Common Cause attributes vs. Special Cause attributes Many vs. Fewer Hard to separate vs. Easy to identify Constant/part of the system vs. Rare/signals a change in the process Predictable vs. Unpredictable The point to stress here is the fact that all our processes have variation and it’s common cause variability. Each sample gives a different value, but the process is operating within some predictable limits. If we are not satisfied with how the process is performing, we need to change the process. How could the process be changed to reduce travel time to work? (Ans: Start earlier, move to a closer location, change routes – seek to reduce or eliminate the current common causes in the system).
