Geography of Ireland The British Isles The British Isles are made up of two large islands and hundreds of small ones. The two large islands are Great Britain and Ireland. Ireland is also called the“ Emerald Isle” 绿宝石岛 because of its rich green countryside. Ireland It is bounded on the northeast by northern Ireland, on the east and southeast by the Irish Sea and St. Georges Channel and on the north and west by the Atlantic Ocean Area Area: The Republic of Ireland covers an area of 70 282 sq. km. Length: The countrys total boundary is 3603km long, of which its land border with North Ireland is 434km. Shape: Ireland has been compared to a basin in which a limestone plateau (石灰石高原) is rimmed by coastal highlands. Maritime influences penetrate the land. The central area is characterized by many lakes, bogs(沼泽) and low ridges（低岭）.The principal mountain ranges are the Mourne Mountains（莫恩山脉）,the Wicklow Mountains in the east and the Macgillicuddy‘s Reeks(麦克几利卡迪) in the southwest.
