At the beginning the protagonist Jude, only eleven years old, suffered from poverty, loneliness and distress because both of his parents were dead and he had to live with an aunt. First he did odds and ends in his aunt’s bakery, and then was apprenticed to a mason. Besides hard manual labor, he taught himself and fumbled for knowledge. After overcoming numerous obstacles he came to Christerminster, which to him was a sacred place for knowledge, but as a mason he had to wander outside the high collegiate buildings.
