Materials for Mechanical Engineering
* Composite Materials For Engineering 11.1 Introduction Composite materials, often shortened to composites, are engineered or naturally occurring materials made from two or more constituent materials with significantly different physical or chemical properties. History Although ‘composites’ is a modern word, people have used composite for quite a long time. Houses have been built by straw reinforced mud bricks for at least 5000 years. Concrete is also a widely used composite. Even some materials that nature used to create human bodies, including bone and muscle, are composites. However, composites introduced in the present context are multiphase artificially made materials. To distinguish them from most metallic alloys and some ceramics, the constituent phases of composites are chemically dissimilar and separated by a distinct interface. Concrete muscle bone Many composites consist of two basic phases. They are matrix and dispersed phase; the former is continuous and surroundings the latter. The properties of composites depend on the properties of the constituent phase, their fractions, and the dispersed phase geometry, which means the shape, the size, the distribution and orientation of the dispersed phase. 11.2 Classification of Composite Materials The dispersed phase The matrix materials The properties of composites particle-reinforced fiber-reinforced laminatecomposites polymer-matrix composites metal-matrix composites ceramic-matrix composites structural composites function composites SiC颗粒 Al2O3片 Al2O3纤维 增强相三种类型 粒子增强复合 层状复合 纤维增强复合 Why composite are increasingly widely used in the fields? 11.3 Propeities of Composite Materials Advantages 1.higher specific strength and specific modulus parameters 2. better fatigue capability 3. better damping property 4. easier processing with respect 11.3.1 Stress-Strain Behavior in the Longitudinal Direction Long continuous fiber-reinforced com
