Low-Frequency Environmental Noise and Active Control of Noise Inside Rooms (低频环境噪声及房屋内噪声的有源控制) Jingnan Guo （郭静男） Noise Regulation Branch, Department of Environment and Conservation, Government of Western Australia, （西澳大利亚州环境保护部噪声处） 168 St Georges Terrace, Perth WA 6000, Australia Email: jingnan.guo@.au ABSTRACT It has been identified by the Western Australia Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) that many complaints regarding vibration problems are actually the noise problem. The DEC recently responded a complaint about railway operations. The complainants targeted the vibration as the problem, referring that the whole house was vibrating when the freight train passed by. Investigation conducted by the DEC indicated that the low-frequency noise (LFN) might be the issue to blame. Very strong low frequency components were recorded inside and outside the house. Because the building structure is more efficient in attenuating the high-frequency noise, the low-frequency components become more obvious inside the house. In fact, LFN problems in our environment have largely been underestimated due to the extensive use of A-weighted noise levels in the current environmental noise management system. Dealing with LFN may have also been deliberately avoided because of the difficulties in controlling it with the traditional acoustic control technologies. Numerous studies have revealed that the LFN could be as harmful and annoying as high frequency noise. In Western Australia, the community’s concern with low-frequency environmental noise has been also continuously increasing in such a way that this problem cannot be avoided any longer. On the other hand, the new technology of active noise control (ANC) has been investigated and developed, which is designed for LFN. Application of the ANC to LFN noise, in particularly in rooms, is likely to be able to tackle the LFN problems, such as the one with low-frequency rail noise. This paper addresses the LFN
