Part A Short Conversations
Directions: In Part A, you will hear thirty short conversations between two speakers. The conversation will be spoken only once. A question about each conversation is written on the paper. After you hear a conversation, read the question about it and the four possible answers on your paper, then decide which one is the best answer to the question.
1. W: Do you want to go on a trip with us to Florida this spring? It’ll cost about $300 a
person.
M: Three hundred dollars? Do you think I just inherited a fortune?
2. W: My watch stopped again, and I just got a new battery.
M: Why don’t you take it to Henry Smith? He can check it for you, and his price is
pretty reasonable.
3. W: We are going to change our meeting from Monday to Tuesday.
M: It’s all the same to me.
4. W: I’m rather worried about my grades, Mr. Jones.
M: But you are getting A’s and B’s, aren’t you? That’s among the top ten in the class/

M: The stuff the nurse gave me seemed to have helped, except that it’s making me a
little sleepy.
9. W: I had a hard time getting through this novel.
M: I know how you feel. Who can remember the names of thirty-five different characters?
10. W: Bill Smith has volunteered to write a summary of the proposals we have agreed on.
M: Will I have a chance to go over it?
11. W: What would you recommend?
M: Well, Madam. Our salmon today is quite fresh, and the way of cooking it is very creative.
