Well, if you havent, its not that pretty.? We are hearing a consistent question about the real value of the architecture to many of the users it was intended to serve.? From an IT perspective, it has value, but if you ask a call center rep or field-based personnel if it has improved their use of the application, in nearly all cases it hadnt.? In fact, most end users are struggling with the decreased usability and performance of the applications in Internet mode.? So, as an industry we must ask: Have we oversold the value of Internet-based applications? The basic answer is yes. The promise of Internet applications has not been realized and, for the most part, it has been painful for and affected productivity of the primary users of the systems: In the call center, users report serious deterioration of application performance due to the numerous roundtrips, cumbersome navigation, and bogged-down networks.? Even after upgrading the network, doubling or quadrupling server farms, and redesigning the interface to streamline navigation, users are still seeing 5 to 20 second increases in call times. For sales reps, there are three scenarios: either they have lost any disconnected use of the system, run a small data center on their laptop, or have a slimmed down application that limits functionality; while some are acceptable, none are ideal.? Can it be that users yearn to return to the world of client/server computing?? Why would the users want that nasty code on the client??
