His father was a farmer-miner. He finished his studies , supported by his father’s hard labor and graduated with an MA in law at Erfurt University but entered the Augustinian Monastery at Erfurt to begin a career both as a priest and theologian teacher. He met at Wittenberg University Johann Staupitz who influenced his theological thinking and whom he succeeded as professor of theology.
