* Unit 10 Environmental matters Starting point 1. What are the five most serious environmental problems we face today? 2. What should we do in the future to save the environment? Air pollution: can be caused by a large quantities of carbon monoxide or nitrogen oxide being released into the air from heavy industrial use of chemicals, vehicle traffic, forest fires, volcanic eruptions etc. Water pollution: refers to water which has become unusable for drinking and damages our health. This is caused by sewage, liquid chemicals, oil spills and industrial and domestic rubbish going into rivers, lakes, seas and oceans. Global warming: is also called the “greenhouse effect” which means that gas gathering around the earth trap heat between the surface of the earth and the layer of the gas. This greenhouse effect causes global warming. One example is that in recent years, large areas of ice in both the North and South Poles are melting. The gases are caused by overpopulation and industrialization, and specifically the use of fridges and cars which release carbon dioxide and other gases into the air. Acid rain: occurs when pollutants from things such as coal power plants, electricity generation, factories and motor vehicles react in the atmosphere and produce acid. This acid then comes down to the earth in rain, snow or hail which causes damage to the environment (for example, killing trees and damaging buildings), humans and animals. The destruction of the rain forests: refers to the fact that many trees in the rain forests have been cut down for commercial use, to clear land to grow food and for people to build houses. Overpopulation and mismanagement of forests are the key causes of this problem. 2. What should we do in the future to save the environment? Air pollution: there are two types of solutions, one is “input control” which tries to reduce the use of chemicals and anything contributing to air pollution, for example, to limit the use of cars, and the other solution
