Gender and Compliments Group Members: Yang Le Xue Wen Yao Li Presenter: Yang Le The Outline of the Topic Ⅰ. The Definition of Compliment Ⅱ. The Reason of Giving a Compliment Ⅲ. The Different Use of Compliment Between Men and Women Ⅳ. The Reasons for These Differences Ⅴ. Conclusion Ⅰ.The Definition of Compliment A compliment is a speech act which explicitly or implicitly attributes credit to someone other than the speaker, usually the person addressed, for some “good” (possession, characteristic, skill, etc.) which is positively valued by the speaker and the hearer. (Holmes,1986) Ⅱ. The Reason of Giving a Compliment Compliments are usually intended to make others feel good. The primary function of it is most obviously affective and social, rather than referential or informative. They are generally described as positively affective speech acts serving to increase or consolidate the solidarity between the speaker and the addressee. Ⅲ. The Different Use of Compliment Between Men and Women ① Women give and receive significantly more compliments than men do, as the diagram illustrates. ② Women’s compliments tend to be expressed with linguistically stronger forms and syntactic patterns. e.g. Women: What lovely children! What a splendid hat! I love your skirt, where did you get it? Men: Good Goal. Nice car. ③ Women use more personalized compliment forms than men, and men prefer impersonal forms. Almost 83% of female-female interactions used personalized forms compared to only 32% of male-male compliments. e.g. Women: I like your new hair style. Your shoes are very beautiful, when did you buy it? It’s very suitable for you. Men: Good haircut. ④ Women and men tend to give compliments about different things. The majority compliments include the followings aspects: Appearance compliment( including clothes, shoes and decorates
