Unit: Erosion Weathering Objectives: - S6C1PO9 Identify the earth processes that cause erosion. - S6C1PO10 Describe how currents and wind cause erosion and land changes - S6C1PO11 Describe the role that water plays in the following processes that alter the Earth’s surface features: erosion, deposition, weathering. - S6C1PO12 Compare rapid and slow processes that change the Earth’s surface, including: rapid – earthquakes, volcanoes, floods, slow – wind, weathering. - S6C1PO13 Identify and explain how natural events affect humans. - S6C1PO14 Identify the earth events that cause changes in atmospheric conditions (e.g., volcanic act., forest fires). - S6C1PO15 Analyze evidence that indicates life and environmental conditions have changed (e.g., tree rings, fish fossils in desert regions, ice cores). Main Topics/ Activities: What are the earth processes that cause Erosion? (PO9/PO10/PO11) Initial Activity: BrainPop – Erosion – An animated segment that introduces the way that erosion occurs. /science/earthsystem/erosion/ BrainPop – Weathering- An animated segment that introduces the way that weathering occurs. /science/weather/weathering/ Tradebook: Erosion by Becky Olien/ Class discussion Conduct experiment in the back of the book (p.22): “Make a Sugar Cave”. This will show the students how water and wind cause erosion and land changes. *This experiment must be started the day before because it needs to freeze overnight!
