A Study on the Application of Communicative Language Teaching Approach in Student’s Oral English Le 【Abstract】This essay is to discuss an approach--communicative language teaching (CLT) into English classes of Chinese colleges for the improvement of students’ oral ability, especially emphasizing on the strategies of using group work. 【Key words】Communicative language teaching (CLT);Teaching approach;Group work 0 Introduction “Dummy English” is a not new popular word appeared in China, which describes the phenomenon that most students could read and write in English, but could hardly communicate in English. Students in colleges, after at least six-year English learning, still might not be able to talk with each other about simple daily life in English. This deficiency in English teaching and learning has been noticed and colleges are looking hard for solutions. The aim of this essay is to discuss an approach――communicative language teaching (CLT) into English classes of Chinese colleges for the improvement of students’ oral ability. CLT is not new since “the original of CLT are to be found in the changes in the British language teaching tradition dating from the late 1960” (Richards Rodgers, 2001:64). In China, teachers and students seem familiar with it now; however, various barriers to the application of this approach have been identified: Large-scale classes (usually a class of more than thirty students, which is to many for language learning class), make it difficult for teacher to control and contribute enough time to each student in English speaking class. Examination (usually CET-4 or CET-6), only tests English listening, reading and writing abilities but not speaking. Traditional teaching style such as grammar translation and audio-lingual methods, are probably not effective for teaching speaking English.
