If something made of cloth billows, it moves in the wind. e.g. Her long skirt billowed in the breeze. 3. chatter: v. to talk fast in a friendly way without stopping, especially about things that are not serious or important e.g. She chattered excitedly like a child. 4. clench: v. to close your hands or your mouth tightly clench your fists/teeth/hands e.g. Tom beats on the door with clenched fists. 5. engage: v. ⑴ to employ someone e.g. We intend to engage a tutor for Eric. ⑵ engage in sth / be engaged in sth: to involve yourself in an activity e.g. Mr. Wang is engaged in the new project for sales. ⑶ engage sb. in conversation: to begin talking to someone e.g. He decides to engage the pretty lady in conversation. ※ engagement: ⑴ an agreement to get married ⑵ an arrangement to do sth. or meet someone 6. exaltation: n. ⑴ great happiness; very strong feeling of happiness e.g. He cried in exaltation. ⑵ the state of being put into a high rank or position exalt: v. to be exalted to the position of 7. fortify: v. ⑴ to make sb. feel physically or mentally stronger; to strengthen to fortify oneself with something e.g. We fortified ourselves with a beer before we started. ⑵ to build towers, walls around a place to defend it e.g. The town was heavily fortified. 8. parole: n. permission for sb. to leave prison on the condition that she or he promises to behave well on parole e.g. He was released on parole after serving three years. 9. retreat: v. ⑴ to move away
