This disease mostly occurred fiporadic but occasionally epidemic and caused a considerable loss of the crop. Recently this disease was also reported from Zhuzhou(株州)，Sinhua(新化)and Anxiang(安乡)of Hunan province and Yintan(鹰潭)of Jiangai province. The symptoms of this disease might be mistaken for the rice dwarf at a brief glance. However, after several years investigation, it has been demonstrated that this disease is quite different from rice dwarf in many aspects such as symptoms, disease reaction, host range, mode of transmission and the causal entity. Furthermore, it is also entirely different from other virus and mycoplasm-like organism diseases of rice so far reported from China and other countries‘11 . I. SYMPTOMS Generally, the symptoms of the disease are stunted growth, increased tillerings,narrow and short leaves, resulting in depressed panicle initiation or empty panicles.
