Service Learning is defined as applying theories, concepts, and skills learned in a course to situations in one’s community in a way that provides practical service for another individual or group.
Because service learning is individualized and context-specific, grading the student’s success in the activity may be somewhat subjective. However, there are some components that serve as useful indicators in almost all service learning situations. The table below provides a starting point for service learning evaluation. Professors should feel free to add, delete, or modify grading components based on their own course objectives for service learning.
Service learning activity grades are generally a portion of the total semester grade. Often the grade for service learning comprises 5 – 10% of the total semester grade in a course.
Evaluation may be conducted by the professor, by an on-site service learning supervisor, or both. A good learning vehicle is for the student, the on-site supervisor, and the professor to each complete an evaluation on the student, and then for the professor and the student to examine and compare the three evaluations.
