Taiwan is in the area of highly likely happening of natural disasters. Therefore, disaster mitigation education shall be started from childhood. The best location for such education is at schools. In accordance with the nine-year course outline of elementary schools, the main focus of geography course in the social field in the seventh year is to understand the geography of Taiwan. The course includes terrains, climate and water, etc. Most of different versions of textbooks on natural disasters in Taiwan cover earthquakes, typhoons, mudflows and landslides in simple ideas or merely mentioning in the texts. The mitigation knowledge is obviously insufficient and much less than the required knowledge of students in the publicity handbook of disaster education made by Ministry of Education. This research, based on the self-edited courses and teaching materials of mitigation of natural disasters, selects three disasters of earthquakes, typhoons, mudflows and landslides. The target is the first graders at a junior high school under the experiment of ten classes. The mitigation education is infused into the curriculum of Understanding Geography in Taiwan in the hope to improve the knowledge and attitudes of natural disaster mitigation.
