It is the substitution of inoffensive or vague or roundabout expressions for harsh or blunt or direct ones. This paper aims to expose the differences between English and Chinese euphemisms by comparatively analyzing their linguistic characteristics and culture. Due to linguistic and cultural differences, the translation methods for English and Chinese euphemisms were put forward. This thesis falls into four parts. The first part makes a definition and demonstrates characteristics of euphemism. The second part makes a brief summary of formation of English and Chinese euphemisms. The third part gives a full analysis of differences between English and Chinese euphemisms in their linguistic characteristics and culture. The fourth part puts forward the translation methods according to their differences.
