unit 2 WHO
* * Unit 2 World Health Organization (WHO) 1. Founded in 1948, the World Health Organization (usually abbreviated to WHO) leads the world alliance for Health for All. A specialized agency of the United Nations with 191 Members States, WHO promotes technical cooperation for health among nations, carries out programs to control and eradicate disease and strives to improve the quality of human life. Unit 2 WHO 2. The objective of WHO is the attainment by all peoples of the highest possible level of health. Health, as defined in the WHO Constitution, is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Unit 2 WHO In support of its main objective, the Organization has four main functions: to give worldwide guidance in the field of health, to set global standards for health, to cooperate with governments in strengthening national health programs and to develop and transfer appropriate health technology, information and standards. Unit 2 WHO 3. Major achievements: A major event in WHO’s first 50 years was the global eradication of smallpox (天花). This disease scarred and killed millions before being officially declared eradicated in 1980. Eradication resulted in a huge reduction in human suffering and great financial savings. Unit 2 WHO The Untied States alone saves its entire investment in the eradication program every month because costly protection measures are no longer needed. Other diseases such as polio(脊髓灰质炎)and guinea-worm(豚鼠虫)disease are on the threshold of eradication and, thanks to new and better methods of treatment, leprosy(麻疯病)is also being overcome. Unit 2 WHO But, as well as fighting infectious disease, WHO is a key player in promoting primary health care, delivering essential drugs, making cities healthier, building partnerships for health, promoting healthy lifestyles and environments to achieve --- Health for All. Unit 2 WHO 4. Fighting diseases, old and new: All but one of the old
