Oscar Niemeyer Introduction: Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1907, Oscar Niemeyer is recognized as one of the world’s most fiercely original architects and the central figure of Brazilian architectural Modernism. The prolific designer of more than 600 buildings, Niemeyer has been in practice for seven decades. Architecture, he declares must be “functional, beautiful, and shocking.” Transgressing orthodox Modernist aesthetic doctrine and subverting hegemonic cultural models, his work privileged invention and affirmed spectacle and luxury, pleasure, beauty, and sensuality as legitimate architectural pursuits. Career path: Oscar Niemeyer can easily be described as one of thee most significant architects of the twentieth century, due to his personality, his professional career, and his intellectual capital. The Brazilian architect graduated from the University of Brazil in 1935. Niemeyer worked with Le Corbusier on innovative plans for the ministry of Health Education in Rio de Janeiro (1936). In 1939 he produced the Brazilian Stand at the World Expo in New York and in 1943 “la residencia Peixoto.” throughout the 1950’s Niemeyer was the official architect for public buildings in the city of Brasilia. His work has a strong “green” quality, as Niemeyer realizes the importance of adapting his buildings to fit in with their environmental surroundings in an unusual style. Characteristics of Oscar Niemeyer’s work: Expressive/curvilinear lines White concrete Utilizing surrounding environment in the design Brises-soleil azuielo Auditorium in Ravello Niemeyer used stilts to raise his buildings up so that one could see under to the surrounding environment, creating a sense that nature and environment could become part of architectural design.
