The effect of ped size ,simulated rainfall duration and frequency on the leaching of salts from clay topsoils Name: Liu Jiuru Introduction Leaching of saline-sodic clay topsoils leads to swelling and deflocculation . The land bordering the Thames estuary in southern England. Identify the relative of storm size, duration and frequency on leaching of clay aggregates ranging from 5 to 50 mm and determine the practical significance of diffusive retention under realistic rainfall regimes. Materials and methods 1. Column Cylinders, 137 mm in diameter and 200 mm high. 2. Rainfall Via an automated rainfall simulator. 3. Treatments One rainfall event per day One rainfull event per three days Continuous rainfull Results Results Results Model The model includes there components: L = x + y + z Where : x is a polynomial function ,relating salt leached to cumulative drainage for one treatment. Model y is a correction factor taking into account the aggregate size. z is a correction factor taking into account the amount of simulated rainfall. Model In the equations : L percentage salt leached from 200 mm of topsoil d cumulative drainage from the plough layer, mm p aggregate size, mm s storm size, mm per 3 days After combining these equations: Model Conclusions Aggregate size ,storm duration and storm frequency influence the rate of leaching from the topsoil under conditions of minimum tillage. As might be expected , rainfall depth and frequency had less effect on leaching efficiency as aggregate size decreased. Excellent agreement was obtained for a natural winter rainfall when the soil surface was prote
