Name: _Ma Rui Class: Group 8 Student Number: 15 Hunger in developed and developing regions of the world – Millennium Development Goal 1 Every day, about 16,000 children die because of hunger and it signifies one child every five seconds. The definition of hunger is that people can not get enough food to be healthy. The first Millennium Development Goal is to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger. This essay will firstly outline some of the causes of hunger. Then it will compare the hunger proportion between developed and developing countries. Finally, it will compare the rates between different developing regions. Natural disaster, food shortage, war and poverty are some of the main causes of hunger. Natural disaster, such as floods and long periods of drought, is on the increase in recent years. This situation is more serious in developing countries and it causes food shortage. In the long-term, improving agricultural output offers the quickest fix for hunger, but it is very difficult to improve agricultural output (World Food Programme 2012). For example, people in Zambia depend on regular rain to grow their crops; many rural communities in the country have no irrigation systems or wells (English Language Institute 2011p16). Further more, war makes hunger become more serious, especially for some developing countries. From Latin American to Africa to Asia, war kills millions of people not only during fighting, but also on account of hunger. For example, over one million people died and millions more were displaced from their lands in Cambodia, while suffering unimaginable hunger and sickness (English Language Institute 2011p18). Another significant cause of hunger in developing countries is poverty. For instance, people in Zambia do not have easy access to seeds and fertilizers so they cannot grow enough food to eat. At the same time, because there are many pests and diseases, the crops and livestock often get sick and die (English Lang
