Language Points Unit One Dusk 1) A king that is conquered must see strange looks, so bitter a thing is the heart of man. (Para. 3) This is a line of verse taken from the book entitled Tales of the Mermaid Tavern by By Alfred Noyes. Paraphrase: A king that is conquered must be subject to contempt and humiliation, which makes him so sad. 2) The wanderers in the dusk did not choose to have strange looks fasten on them, therefore they came out in this bat-fashion, taking their pleasure sadly in a pleasure-ground that had empties of its rightful occupants.(Para. 4) Paraphrase: The wanderers in the dusk didn’t want to be contemned or sympathized by successful people; therefore, like bats, they came out in the dusk, when they could enjoy themselves sadly in a park without meeting successful and condescending people. 3) A blazing, many-tiered stretch of windows shone through the dusk and almost dispersed it, marking the haunts of those other people, who held their own in life’s struggle, or at any rate had not had to admit failure. (Para. 4) Paraphrase: The bright light from the windows of the many-storied buildings shone through and almost eliminated the dusk, lighting up the parks that other people often like to go. These people managed to defend themselves successfully in the struggle of life or had not had to admit failure anyway. 4) He had failed in a more subtle ambition, and for the moment he was heart-sore and disillusioned, and not disinclined to take a certain cynical pleasure in observing and labeling his fellow wanderers as they went their ways in the dark stretches between the lamplights.(Para 4) Paraphrase: He had failed to achieve his great ambition, and for the time being he was sadly aware that he was hopeless. He tended to take a cynical view of life and enjoy watching the wanderers walking in the park in darkness and identifying them as failures. 5) There was an eloquent pause after the story had been told. “I suppose you think I’ve spun you r
