The Portrait of a Lady is regarded as the masterpiece of his early phase of writing for his masterful creation of character, his unique international theme, his assured command of the English language, and especially his imaginative use of point of view and interior monologue. 1.1 Life and Career of Henry James Henry James was born into a wealthy American family in 1843. His father, Henry James Sr., was one of the best-known intellectuals in mid-nineteenth-century America. In his youth James traveled back and forth between Europe and America, which inspired him to create the international theme. At the age of 19 he briefly attended Harvard Law School, but soon dropped out. Two years later, he devoted himself to literature. By his mid- twenties James earned admiration for his writing skills. James himself moved to Europe early on in his professional career and was naturalized as a British citizen in 1915 shortly before his death. He never married and perhaps this gave him time to write: in the four decades of his writing career, he produced nearly 100 books, including such classics as The Golden Bowl, The Wings of the Dove, and The Art of Fiction, varied from novels to essays, from plays to autobiographies. 1.2 A Brief Introduction to The Portrait of a Lady First written in the 1880s and revised in 1908, The Portrait of a Lady is the story of a spirited young American woman, Isabel Archer, who “affronts her destiny” (James, 1996:8).
