Production of High Strength Low Alloy Bridge Steels Key Words: High strength bridge steel; Tensile Strength; Yield Strength; Segregation; Steel cleanliness; Inclusions INTRODUCTION Bridge steels are required to have high strength, good weld ability and good corrosion resistance in order to bear the static loads and dynamic loads and to endure erosion due to being exposed to air. To successfully develop high strength corrosion-resistant bridge steels, suitable steelmaking, refining and continuous casting processes should be optimized to improve the slab quality, and the rolling process should also be well controlled to assure excellent microstructure and good performance of the steel. In the current study, a kind of high strength bridge steel, named with F55q, was developed via industrial practices. Efforts were mainly paid to the steelmaking and rolling process and the control of steel cleanliness. COMPOSITION DESIGN Bridge steel is one of the high strength low-alloy (HSLA) steel. Carbon and manganese are the basic elements of HSLA steel. Low carbon content is required to approximately 0.05 mass % in order to improve the welding property. The addition of alloys may bring in more carbon to the molten steel. The designed carbon content is 0.04-0.06 mass % in the current work. Nickel, vanadium and titanium enhance the strength of the low-carbon steels by improving the steel performance via grain refinement and precipitation hardening.[1-3] Molybdenum inhibits the precipitation of Nb(N,C) in the austenite, defers the generation of polygon ferrites and expands the cooling rate extent of generating the bainite. Thus, the addition of Mo to the low-carbon steel can achieve better strength and toughness. Copper can decrease the Ar 3 temperature and increase the corrosion resistance of the steel, but it lowers the ductile-brittle transition temperature.
