Prerequisites to the Course
This course is for students who intend to proceed in a professional field requiring effective English communication to specialists and non-specialists in their field. Students entering this course should have a good command of basic English. This is necessary to maximize time for developing professional English communication skills instead of basic functional English. If you believe that your English is functionally weak and require much remedial work, be sure efforts will be made to catch up with the rest of the class.
Course Description:
This Comprehensive English is an integrated program with primary focus in developing general communication skills of the participants. Grammar, speaking, reading and vocabulary development are integral parts of the course. The goal of this course is to aid students to write good English and improve their overall English communication skills.
In addition to the text book, students will read and comprehend a variety of supplementary materials including: journal articles, academic papers, news, etc. Class assignments include but not limited to: extensive reading, writing assignments, interactive peer editing, and oral presentation either individually or in group. There will be a final examination for MSc students at the end of each term. Performance assessment of students will be based on Attendance (10%), Participation (10%), Assignments (40%) and Final (40%). Duration of MSc course is 20 weeks (2 terms) commencing on September 1st 2008 through July 2009.
