Her works ranged from nonfictions, fictions and essays, which include: Against Interpretation, On Photography, Illness as Metaphor and The Benefactor. Against Interpretation, being Susan Sontag’s most outstanding and attractive work, won her the title of “ the current acutest writer” in America. Susan Sontag was considered different in that she had a deep understanding of anesthetics and photography. The reason I choose her work—Beauty, which was first published in Vogur magazine in 1975, is that she argued about beauty, an abstract word, in a very logical and convincing way. Meanwhile, Susan Sontag presented her art of arguing about beauty in a feminist’s perspective. By analyzing this text, readers can better appreciate Susan Sontag’s fine art of arguing of an abstract word. Thus this essay can provide readers a better skill in arguing forcefully and logically. This essay will focus on the various stylistic features of Beauty with Sara Mills’ theory in her book Feminist Stylistics, through which we can analyze Susan Sontag’s choice of words, grammar and sentences. The importance of doing such a research are as follows: By analyzing the stylistic features of the text, we are able to have a profound understanding of Sontag’s argument on beauty and how she draws our attention to sexism. Though many researches have done on feminist literary criticism, most of which are from the aspects of the development, the influence and the current situation, which leaves much space for a research on a particular writer, as Susan Sontag.
