Introduction The Old Testament provides the religious background of the New Testament, and through the OT we can learn God’s salvific plan. There are many important themes in the OT, such as sin, the law, election and the historical reconstruction. There is also an issue about the OT that how can it be a whole. The OT canon was finalized at the end of the first century AD, while some books were included and others were excluded. There are different views about the canon. 2. The Pentateuch The Pentateuch consists of five books, and the Pentateuch has the highest authority and holiness because it tells the history of Israel and God’s instruction. There are some different views about the emergence of the Pentateuch, such as JEDP in the 20th century. The Pentateuch doesn’t tell us the author, but Moses often is mentioned as receiving the task to write up certain legal and other portions of it. Moses is mentioned as the author of “the book of Moses” in the later books of the OT. 3. Genesis Genesis tells us the creation, the beginning of humankind, the fall and the history of Israel’s ancestors. We can see two creation stories in Genesis1-2. God created the world day by day through his “Word” in Gen 1, and Gen 2 focuses on the creation of humankind, while God created man with his work but not his “Word” in Gen 1. Gen 1 is difficult to be reported as a scientific report. How can the creation story in Genesis connect with the scientific cosmology? All things are good in Gen 1 and the Fall appears in Gen 3.
