Philip Freneau (1752-1832) 1) Freneau was neoclassical by training and taste yet romantic in essential spirit. He was also at once a satirist and a sentimentalist, a humanitarian but also a bitter polemicist善辩论者, a poet of Reason yet the celebrant of “lovely Fancy”, and deistic optimist inspired by the themes of death and transience. 2) Freneau was both viewed as the Poet of the Revolution and the Father of American Poetry. As a poet, he heralded American literary independence. 3) Freneau was mainly a journalistic editorials rather than good poet. Later on in his life, he wrote political satires and some poems that were in favor of reform causes, such as abolition, legal reforms, and criminal reforms. His achievement is small, but he was one of the first poets of some quality in American literature. He did have a facility with language and knew what are required, but he was not a great poet because he did not have the opportunity to Develop his poetic talent. Most of his poems are political satires or revolutionary war verse for the time.
