IBM AS400 Solution APC Supported Solution for IBM AS/400 Servers using native controlled shutdown. Step 1: Cable // Triple Chassis: Use APC’s AS400 Interface Kit simple signalling cable part no. # 940-0006A or 940- 0031A “ This cables may be used in conjunction with different OS and AS400 ) and connect the cable to the triple chassis AP9604S. ( A 9 to 15 pin cable ( 940-0006A) and 9 to 9 pin cable (940-0031A) are included with the kit.) Step 2: Cable connection: Connect the cable end labelled UPS to the UPS and the other end to the AS/400. Once this is done there should be a message on the AS 400 monitor that a UPS has been attached to the AS/400. Step 3: Settings: There are only two settings you can change on the AS/400 native UPS application: 3.1 Set the QUPSDLYTIM to a numeric value. This numeric value is your delay time before the AS/400 begins saving main storage and completes a shutdown. Although this is the best solution, you must determine how long time it takes for the system to complete a shutdown using PWRDWNSYS *IMMED. Once this value is determined, you can set the delay time to provide sufficient runtime without reaching low battery during the shutdown process. 3.1 If timing a PWRDWNSYS *IMMED is not possible, you could use this rough estimate to calculate shutdown time. # Seconds = (2.816 * (Main Storage in Megabytes)) + 30 3.2 You can set the QUPSDLYTIM to *NOMAX. This allows the system to wait until low battery. This function is designed to allow third party software to initiate shutdown (Power Chute for AS/400). This is not the best solution since the system will wait until low battery to initiate the shutdown. Although you could extend the low battery duration on the a smart ups matrix or Symmetra to 10 minutes in order to allow a complete shutdown, you expose the AS/400 to an immediate shutdown upon IPL during successive power outages. 3.3 The triple chassis can be used
