This caused the “good” fibers to have higher glass transition temperatures (Tg). Material made from these fibers could better withstand the high temperatures of machine washing and drying. The glass transition temperature of a fiber is a critical indicator of its end-use performance. At or near the Tg, fibers become dimensionally unstable and begin to shrink. Therefore, it is desirable for Tg to be sufficiently high in order to withstand the temperatures of machine washing and drying. ? Structural orientation had a major effect on the Tg of the fibers. As the degree of orientation increased in polyester, its Tg increased as well. In Figure 1, the good fiber sample had the higher Tg. This fiber experienced a higher degree of drawing. The increased drawing of the good fiber increased its structural orientation, which increased its Tg and allowed it to withstand high washing and drying temperatures.
