An air conditioner makes us cool in summer and warm in winter. Such a machine must be hard to make. Students from Northwood Middle School, US, decided to make some by themselves.
After a week-long lesson on heating and cooling, about 230 students at Northwood were given a challenge: to build their own air conditioner in just a few hours.
With limited (有限的)materials like copper tubes (铜管)and small pumps, students teamed up, made a plan and began building.
Besides the science class, to support the challenge, teachers also gave their own lessons on heating and cooling. The history of air conditioner was taught in social studies; heat index was taught in Maths; and language arts taught students how to write reports about their machines.
For science teacher Marcy Buchanan, the challenge showed how far her students’ creativity could go. “I think the whole goal was for them to design with their own ideas,” Buchanan said. To her, most students did a much better job ton she had expected.
After a few hours of work, all kinds of different cooling machines came out one after another. Some students used markers to decorate their machines, while others focused on their little inventions. Makkiaka Lagris, 13, sat with her five teammates around their machine. They made a water filter (过滤器)with a small sink and some straws.
“This is awesome,” Makkiaka said. “It feels great to work together, solve problems and engineer some new things that can actually make a difference.”
