As China has just entered into WTO, The major challenge, according to IMD, one of the world’s leading management schools, is for management to rebuilt or restore its credibility in 2003, through increased transparency in practices, honesty in dealings, and ethical behavior. How are managers and professionals to respond? The answer is not always easy to find, and often there are disputes about what the right answer really is. In this course we will look at the main ways of analyzing ethical questions, and seek to apply them to the life of businesses, governments, and other organizations in todays world, especially in China. It is a practical course, for ethics is something that you do, not airy-fairy philosophy. The material wealth and prosperity of many millions of people in the world is properly attributed to techniques of production and economies of scale only possible with large organizations. Yet many are worries because the size and economic power of large corporations exceeds that of many independent nations, and there is evidence of widespread fraud and corruption. The role of business and commerce in society is at the core of this course. The course covers three areas: 1. What do we value? 2. Different ways of approaching issues of ethics and values. 3.
