Personal Perspectives About Les Miserables ——李丹丹 The author of Les Miserables, Victor Hugo is an important nineteenth-century French writer, and he spent all his life on the diligent creation, leaving twenty-two poetry, twelve plays, twenty novels and essays, and several other precious works of literary theory. His works have a great impact in France and around the world. Novel Les Miserables is one of the most important works of Victor Hugo. In this novel, Hugo portrayed the features of this stage from Napoleons defeat at Waterloo to a popular uprising against the July Monarchy historical, drawing a large-scale picture of the social and political life. The book describes the tragedy of three central figures about Jean Valjean, who is an escaping convict and Fantine, who is fugitive in the street and her daughter Cosette. The book reveals that good and simple working people living in the capitalist society are doomed to accept an inevitable fate where they are oppressed, discriminated, and insulted. The author angrily denounced and accused of reasons causing all these unreasonable and unfair phenomenons. Jean Valjean was young and diligent, but he did not find the job all the time. He stealed a piece of bread to give his nephew, so as to stayed in jail for nineteen years. At first, he was sentenced to be in prison for five years only, but he often escaped from the prison because he did not trust the law, so his crime became serious. When he left the prison, Jean Valjean burdened with the prisoners identity, and suffered discrimination of others. Social injustice and exclusion, made him have no hope and confidence to become a good man. But Bishop Myriel was the only one person who was willing to accept him, and he influenced Jean Valjean by his kindness and love. Even though Jean Valjean even wanted to kill him some time, bishop’s broad mind moved him, because the bishop dared to sleep with a convict. Finally, Jean Valjea
