Part One Geography Britain is situated in Northwestern Europe, lying to the north of France and the west of the Netherlands and Denmark.(chapter I) Britain has an area of 244?100 square kilometers (2007) and a population of 60 million (2005). The island of Great Britain is divided into three parts: Scotland in the north; England in the south and Wales in the south-west. (chapter 1) The largest river in the UK, which runs 355 kilometers and empties into Bristol Strait, is Severn River. (chapter 1) The second largest river in the UK is Thames River. It is also the most important river. (chapter 1) The expression “Backbone of England” is used to refer to the Pennines. (chapter 1) In the Highlands of Scotland stands Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain towering 1343 meters. (chapter 1) Of the three parts of Great Britain, Wales is the smallest in population. (chapter 1) Among the four administrative units the most populous and developed is England. (chapter 1) The largest lake in the UK is Lough Neagh. It is in Northern Ireland. (chapter 1) London, the capital of the UK, is situated on the Thames River near its mouth. (chapter 5) The Edinburgh Castle is in Scotland. (chapter 1) The regional capital of Scotland is Edinburgh. (chapter 5) The regional capital of Northern Ireland is Belfast. (chapter 5) The regional capital of Wales is Cardiff. (chapter 5) The second largest city in England, Birmingham, is a metropolitan district and an industrial an manufacturing city. (chapter 5) Liverpool is the second largest seaport in England. (chapter 5) Manchester is an industrial and commercial center. (chapter 5) Britain has a maritime (temperate) climate but changeable weather. (chapter 1) British lead ores contain silver. (chapter 2) The natural gas was discovered in the North Sea in 1964-1966. (chapter 2) Oil deposits were discovered in the North Sea in 1970.
