Therefore, what we should pursue is the equivalence between texts. In her point of view there are three types of texts——content focused text, form focused text as well as appeal focused text.(Rui Xuemei, 2010, P13) She borrows Karl Bühler’s categorization of the functions of language, and “linksthe three functions to their corresponding language ‘dimensions’ and to the text types orcommunicative situations in which they are used” (Mundy, 2001, P73). Text type concernstranslation method, while the kind of text concerns the linguistic elements to be consideredin the process of translating.Reiss’s Notion of EquivalenceReiss’s notion of equivalence focuses not on the rigid notion of “equivalence” and is based on text types andthe linguistic and extra-linguistic components of the text. In her mind all texts should achieve the equivalence in its meaning, form of language and function in terms of communication.Therefore, different types of text should be translated in different methods. Even the same text when translated for different purposes should be translated into different sentences. For example, ifthe idiom “as busy as a bee” appears in a content-focused texts, it should be translated intoChinese as “像一只蜜蜂一样忙碌”, instead, it is proper to translate it as “忙忙碌碌”. What’s impressive is that the advertisement of Nike “just do it”. Its original meaning is do what you want and never hesitate. However, when used for advertising by an IT company it is translated into “很多孩子听了乔丹的话从此进入了IT行业”.
