IntroductionMarine diesel engine is the most widely used engine in ships. Compared with gasoline engine, marine diesel engine has higher thermal efficiency and is more economical. Oil feeding system of marine diesel engine is simpler than gasoline engine so that marine diesel engine is steadier and has less maintenance cost. Marine diesel engine also has lower specific fuel oil consumption and CO2 emission which is considered the main reason of greenhouse effect. However, there is a problem limits the use of marine diesel engine. That is the NOx emission. Marine diesel engine is the main air pollution source of port and sea.NOx is a general term of nitrogen oxides which mainly contains NO and NO2 etc. According to Zeldovich mechanism, in high temperature and pressure condition, nitrogen will react with oxygen and become NOx. Actually, in NOx produced from combustion in marine diesel engine, 90% contents of NOx is NO and 10% is NO2.Every year, people will produce over 100 million tonnes of NOx, and it’s a huge pollution to the air. For example, when a supersonic airplane flies through the stratosphere, it will make a lot of NOx from engine, and NOx will be harmful to Ozone layer. NOx is also the reason of acid rain and respiratory disease especially to lung and cardiac muscle. Therefore, some experts said NOx was more dangerous than SOx. Since the industrial revolution brake out, pollution has been a big problem gradually. Fortunately, human has realized the importance of environment protection. Although it’s not available to make engine zero release, many companies and organizations are trying to control engine emission. Some stringent exhaust gas regulations has come into effect and technologies and developments have been advanced to reduce diesel exhaust emissions.
