Indeed, TomTom expects – in a conservative figure given to financial analysts - the European market to be 14 to 15 million units and the US market to be between 6 and 7 million units this year. Garmin is more optimistic with 15 to 16 million units expected for Europe and up to 9-10 million units for the US. There is a lack of figures for the rest of the world but a few market are emerging in the PND space. the Australian market should be s lightly over half a million this year (source: Intelematics). South Korea sales might be between one and two million units (local media were reporting 1.3 million units last year). Then there are a few other markets where sales can be estimated in the “few hundred thousand” range: Japan (low volume of PNDs despite high GPS penetration; Canalys estimates are around 100,000 PNDs), China, India, Turkey and South Africa. For MIC there are several reasons to this market growth, first: “because of the fact that regular consumers awareness of car navigation is increasing”. Second, because “key vendors are launching value-line PND products, stimulating demand”.
