The symposium traditionally brings together from all over the world scientists and engineers specializing in the field of tsunami research to exchange information and to discuss progress in tsunami science. Since its creation in 1960 in Helsinki, Finland, at the XII IUGG General Assembly, the Commission has sponsored 23 symposia. The 2009 Symposium will be the 24th symposium in this raw and it will be exactly 20 years after the 1989 Symposium that was also held in Novosibirsk.
