K Rocky Reefs and Tide Pools Our goal is to introduce students to how plants and animals in Californias tide pools depend on each other to live. We will study different tidal pool relationships using methods of investigation in both earth and life sciences. We will use the scientific methods of observation, hypothesis testing, experimentation, and conclusion to further our learning in such subjects as water chemistry and animal anatomy. The inner and outer workings of the tide pool plants and animals will be brought to life with different projects in drama, as well as arts and crafts. Other activities include a squid dissection, daily journals, and a field trip to visit actual tide pools. K Oviparous Animals In this class, we will explore animals that hatch from eggs. We will look at many types of real eggs (from ostrich to chicken to silkworm and more) to learn about the size and strength of eggs and how eggs protect the embryo inside. After constructing safe containers in which an egg will be placed, we will then drop the containers from an 8-foot ladder and discover which design is best suited for protecting the egg. Each student will become a bird expert who can build a nest both from materials brought into the classroom and from materials found in the park.Also, each student will create a mini book with various oviparous animals as they hatch out of plastic eggs, and the class will complete a factual class book about oviparous animals. Each student will complete an oviparous animal report that will be presented to the class.We will complete a graph, using realia, to show oviparous animals and animals that give live births. 1 Sea Studies In this oceanography course for beginners, we will have a whale of a good time exploring the abundant and varied life of giant kelp beds and the world of the ocean depths.
