What is iambic pentameter Iambic pentameter consists of one short syllable followed by one long syllable: one unstressed syllable, by one stressed syllable. Pentameter is a measure of verse having five metrical feet. Rhyme Words that rhyme have the same ending vowel and consonant sounds--might rhymes with flight and delight, and begin rhymes with within. Theres also such a thing as half-rhyme, where words almost rhyme: heard and hoard are half-rhymes. Rhyme scheme The recurring pattern in which rhymes are placed in a stanza or poem. The pattern is normally indicated by using the letter a to indicate the first rhyme word, b, the second, and so on. Rhyme scheme The rhyme scheme is the pattern of end-rhyme in a stanza or a poem. It is generally denoted with small-case letters, with each letter assigned a different ending sound. Take, for example, this old nursery rhyme: Sing a song of sixpence, A pocket full of rye, Four and twenty blackbirds, Baked in a pie. When the pie was opened, The birds began to sing. We assign the first letter, a, to the pence ending in the first line, but we assign b to both rye in the second line and pie in the fourth because the words rhyme.
