* The burst trigger should be a few us less than the duration of the DATA burst. This prevents BER measurements during the unstable falling edge transient region at the end of the burst. The first 2 us of DATA after the burst trigger are ignored by the MP1764A error detector. This avoids unstable DATA associated with rising edge transients. The Error Detector then begins synchronization using either PRBS Sync, Normal Sync, Frame Sync, or Quick Sync. BER measurements begin after synchronization. * Two common Burst measurement applications are Circulating Loop testing and PON testing. Circulating Loop tests are used to simulate long-haul transmission systems with a subset of the overall system hardware. Burst DATA repeatedly travels around an optical loop to simulate long distance transmission. This test is popular with submarine system designers and soliton researchers. Passive Optical Networks use passive TDMA to provide data to/from each subscriber. An individual TDMA channel is burst data. * This diagram shows the Circulating Loop test setup. The Pulse Pattern Generator (PPG)/modulator generates an optical gigabit data stream. Closing the Transmit Switch loads the data stream into the optical loop (via the 3 dB coupler). After the loop fills with data (the Loop Time), the Transmit Switch opens and the Loop Switch closes. The loaded bit stream then recirculates around the loop. Each time around the loop the data passes through the coupler. The coupler directs a portion of the data to the O/E where the Error Detector (ED) monitors the BER of the bit stream. A delay circuit sets the distance range monitored by the ED. The ED begins BER measurements when it receives a burst trigger from the Delay circuit. * This is the timing diagram for a circulating loop used to simulate a 10,000 km undersea system. The loop is 400 km long. Therefore, 25 loops are required to simulate 10,000 km. The loop time is 2 ms. Performance at a distance of 800 to 1200
