* Major threats to the Bay and rivers are from nutrients, sediments, toxic chemicals, habitat loss and overfishing. Although toxic chemicals cause harmful effects to the ecosystem, most scientists believe that excess nutrients and sediment have the largest impact on the Bay. Nutrients are essential; they help living things grow. However, excessive amounts of nutrients are harmful.
