What is meant by the term ‘carbon footprint’? Why might an organisation calculate a carbon footprint? What should be included in a carbon footprint? The different ‘scopes’ included in a carbon footprint differ depending on its purpose The Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol) is an international accounting tool. Emissions are subdivided into three scopes: Scope 1: All direct GHG emissions (sources are owned or controlled by the reporting entity) Scope 2: Indirect GHG emissions from consumption of purchased electricity, heat or steam (emissions occur at another source but are a result of the reporting entity’s activities) Scope 3: Other indirect emissions, e.g. the extraction and production of purchased materials and fuels, transport-related activities in vehicles not owned or controlled by the reporting entity, outsourced activities, waste disposal, etc. See: / What scope is which?
