Using a Hand Lens A hand lens is a tool that magnifies objects, or makes objects appear larger. This makes it possible for you to see details of an object that would be hard to see without the hand lens. Look at a Coin or a Stamp 1. Place an object such as a coin or a stamp on a table or other flat surface. 2. Hold the hand lens just above the object. As you look through the lens, slowly move the lens away from the object. Notice that the object appears to get larger. 3. Keep moving the lens until the object begins to look a little blurry. Then move the hand lens a little closer to the object until the object is once again in sharp focus. H2 Using a Bar Graph A bar graph helps you organize and compare data. Make a Bar Graph of Animal Heights Animals come in all different shapes and sizes. You can use the information in the table to make a bar graph of animal heights. 1. Draw the side and the bottom of ; the graph. Label the side of the graph as shown. The numbers will show the height of the animals in centimeters. 2. Label the i bottom of the graph. Write the names of the animals at the bottom so that there is room to draw the bars. 3. Choose a title for your graph. Your title should describe the subject of the graph. 4. Draw bars to show the height of each animal. Some heights are between two numbers. H 3 Using a Calculator After youve made measurements, a calculator can help you analyze your data. Add and Multiply Decimals Suppose youre an astronaut. You may take 8 pounds of Moon rocks back to Earth. The table shows the weights of the rocks. Can you take them all? Use a calculator to find out.
