This meeting was convened by the Mexican Commission for Cooperation with Central America, the Mexican Institute for International Cooperation and the National Association of Universities and Institutions of Higher Learning (Asociación Nacional de Universidades e Instituciones de Educación Superior; ANUIES). One of the central themes of discussion was the integration of Mesoamerican universities through joint graduate programs related to the necessities of the region. As a result of this meeting it was concluded that there is a series of challenges and opportunities that will need to be examined, and that these are related to the possibility of establishing joint graduate programs by making use of modern systems of communication to help distance learning, and in addition to the need to strengthen other levels of education such as technology and degree programs.
