Topic Five Packing Shipment (包装与装运) Teaching Procedures 1) Packing 2) Shipment 3) Sample Letters 4) Situational Conversation Packing There are three kinds of transportation of goods in the international trade. 1) bulk cargo(散装货物): which refers to the goods that needn’t to be packed, such as coal, iron ore(铁矿), etc. 2) nude cargo(裸装货物): which refers to those with regular shapes, in pieces of different shapes, for instance, steel plates, blooms(铁块), etc. 3) packed cargo: which needs to be packed in different ways. Packed Cargo Transport Packing (usually known as outer packing): which must be strong enough to protect the packed goods against such hazards as pilferage(偷盗), rough handling(野蛮搬运), corrosion(腐蚀) and crushing(挤压), etc. And it must also be as light and compact as possible to keep freight costs low. Sales Packing (usually known as inner packing): which is done mainly to push sales. It is now universally recognized as a decisive aid in selling household consumer goods(家用消费品). Neutral Packing (中性包装) 1) It is frequently used in international trade to promote export sales. 2) It carries no labels at all either on the outer packing or inner packing that indicate country of origin, the manufacturer or the name of the commodity itself. 3) This form of packing makes it possible for exporters to get around (避开) high customs duties or unreasonable import quota (不合理的进口配额) of the importing countries. Packing must be strikingly marked Outer packing marks mainly include transport marks, directive marks and warning marks. Transport mark consists of the name of the consignee(收货人) or shipper/consigner(托运人), destination and packing number. Directive marks are eye-catching figures and concise instructions concerning manner of proper handling, storing, loading and unloading of the packed goods, e.g “HANDLE WITH CARE” Warning marks are obvious symbols or words to warn people against the hidden danger of inflammables, explosives and poisonous products, e.g
