MOOCs are here to stay and evolving rapidly. Expectations and methods of presentation will likely standardize over time, becoming more consistent and predictable. Large classes may be used as outreach tools. Institutions may open their content to a wider audience and extend their reach within the community. In the fall of 2011 our first exposure to MOOC’s was the Artificial Intelligence course by Peter Norvig and Sebastian Thrun, and that was for free (it was Erin Kelley’s idea). This course offering turned out to be a major event! With over 160,000 registrants, heads began to turn. Since then, MOOC’s have become one of the most controversial and talked about topics in academia. If you are not familiar with them, you soon will be. The acronym MOOC stands for Massive Open Online Courses Sample of MOOC Providers Here is a sample of some of the many for-profit and non-profit MOOC Providers offering courses today. Coursera, Udacity and edX are currently the leading providers. Apple iTunesU A service hosted by Apple that allows instructors to manage, distribute, and control access to audio and video content for students within a college using Apples iTunes Store infrastructure. Canvas Features a well-organized listing of all current classes and the institutions that offer them. Is open-source, meaning that you can grab the code base for free and run it on your very own server. Class2Go Stanford’s Class2Go is also open-source.
